Immigrants in Maryland

Immigrants, Latinos, and Asians account for growing shares of the economy and electorate in Maryland. Immigrants (the foreign-born) make up roughly 1 in 7 Marylanders, and nearly half of them are naturalized U.S. citizens who are eligible to vote. “New Americans”—immigrants and the children of immigrants—account for about 1 in 8 registered voters in the state. Immigrants are not only integral to the state’s economy as workers, but also account for billions of dollars in tax revenue and consumer purchasing power. Moreover, Latinos and Asians (both foreign-born and native-born) wield $34.2 billion in consumer purchasing power, and the businesses they own had sales and receipts of $15.6 billion and employed more than 96,000 people at last count. As high-skilled workers, immigrants accounted for more than one-quarter of all scientists in the state, and more than one-fifth of all health care practitioners. Immigrant, Latino, and Asian workers, consumers, and entrepreneurs are integral to Maryland’s economy and tax base—and they are an electoral force with which every politician must reckon.

THE TRAIL OF TEARS

THE TRAIL OF TEARS

Trump says that he would deport all undocumented immigrants in the United States,
an estimated 11 million people. American cities and counties in the Southwest and
Midwest tried to expel Mexican-Americans once before in the 1930s, with traumatic
results for the families affected. But perhaps an even more illuminating comparison
is with the mass deportation that the United States sponsored a hundred years
earlier, in the 1830s.

In that decade, the federal government uprooted some 80,000
Native Americans from their homes and forced them west of the Mississippi, into
what is now Oklahoma. It was a humanitarian disaster and remains one of the most
shameful episodes in the country’s history. Though few if any Americans are proud
of The Trail of Tears, as the Cherokees call their harrowing expulsion from
the Southeast and deadly journey westward, there are some obvious differences between undocumented immigrants today and native peoples in the early 1830s. For one, American Indians had been living in what is now the United States since
“time immemorial,” as many people observed in the era,
whereas undocumented immigrants are recent arrivals...

IMMIGRATION REFORM POSSIBLE IN 2015

US Representative Mario Diaz-Balart, one of the forces behind efforts by
Republicans in the House of Representatives to come up with an immigration reform bill, says that early 2015 is the next real opportunity to pass such
a measure; however, this is likely to continue to be elusive if the window
closes with no movement.

Next year the political focus will inevitably move to the presidential
election in 2016 and to announcements about who will run and what they
intend to do. “I’m hoping we can do it [immigration reform] early next
Congress,” Diaz-Balart admits. “If we don’t do it early next Congress,
it just gets more difficult.”

Washington Post Calls for End of Investor Visas

USA_Passport_Stamp

The editor’s view is that the, “EB-5 has shown paltry results…”  It also noted that all too often the program has been tarnished by fraud. The paper did not oppose the program because it consists of selling visas to entrepreneurs. “Notice we haven’t said EB-5 is wrong because it’s immoral for the U.S. government to sell visas.”  Rather, the WaPo opined, “…let the thousands of visas set aside for EB-5 applicants be reassigned to immigrants who are worthy even if they aren’t rich.”
FAIR shares the view that the investor visa program should be ended and has warned against the current congressional proposal to reauthorize these visas. “Congress should shut down the program and devise a rational, skilled-based legal immigration policy. Then many of the people buying their way in with EB-5s might otherwise qualify as skilled immigrants,”
This editorial stance of the WaPo is probably one of the few areas on which the paper and FAIR agree. The paper has long supported visa increases and amnesty for illegal entrants and visa overstayers. No change in this position has appeared since the paper was bought by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS RALLY FOR IN-STATE TUITION AT STATEHOUSE IN MASS.

BOSTON - Students who entered the United States illegally rallied at the Statehouse to support bills that would give them in-state college tuition and access to state financial aid.

Similar bills have been considered by the Legislature since 2002 but have never passed.
...
"Students and families and schools have waited way too long... to see a solution to what really is a senseless and systematic locking out of an entire population of young people who are talented, who
are smart and who are hard-working and who could be our state's future nurses and doctors and teachers and entrepreneurs and innovators," said Carlos Rojas Alvarez.

MARK ZUCKRBERG HAS A MESSAGE FOR ALL AMERICAN:
UNFOLLOW DONALD TRUMP.

Zuckerberg's advocacy group FWD.us released a statement Wednesday calling
Trump's proposal that the U.S. deport 11 million illegal immigrants "absurd."
Posted by FWD.us president Todd Schulte, the statement doesn't name Trump
specifically but calls out the "voices yelling for mass deportation," an immigration
reform idea Trump has supported.

FWD.us's statement reads as a retort to Trump's first policy paper on immigration
reform, in which he refers to Florida Senator Marco Rubio as "Mark Zuckerberg's
personal senator, " implying Rubio takes his immigration policy cues from the
Facebook co-founder. Here's what the FWD.us post says about the consequences
of mass deportation:

"Deporting 11.5 million people would cost U.S. taxpayers $400 to $600 billion dollars,
and would take at least 20 years to complete. Even worse, this mass deportation would
reduce our GDP by $1.7 trillion--over 5 percent. Many industries would be hit hard,
others--like agriculture, construction and hospitality--would be devastated."

INDIAN IMMIGRANTS IN THE UNITED STATES

Indian migrants began arriving in the United States as early as 1820. Though few in number at the time, the Indian population has surged since the 1990s to become the second-largest immigrant group in the country after Mexicans, and ahead of those born in China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. As of 2013, more than 2 million Indian-born immigrants resided in the United States, accounting for 4.7 percent of the 41.3 million foreign-born population.

Similar to early Chinese and Japanese immigrants, Indian arrivals in the 19th century were largely unskilled and uneducated farmers. Most came to work in agriculture in California. The restrictive Immigration Acts of 1917 and 1924, which effectively banned immigration from Asia, brought the already low levels of migration from India to a halt. As of 1960, there were only 12,000 Indian immigrants in the United States, representing less than 0.5 percent of the 9.7 million foreign-born population at the time.
